Which rail pass beats buying tickets individually
Covers 8 major passes — Eurail Global, Interrail, JR Pass, BritRail, Swiss Travel Pass, and more. For each: who can buy it, what trains are included, typical cost, and when the pass wins versus advance point-to-point fares. European operators and routes are covered separately on the European Train Guide.
Non-residents only EU residents only Open to all
Eurail Global Pass
33 European countries Non-residents only
Coverage Most national rail networks across 33 European countries. High-speed trains (TGV, Thalys, Eurostar) require a separate seat reservation at additional cost.
Cost range From ~€224 (5 travel days within 2 months, 2nd class adult) up to ~€690 for a 3-month continuous pass. Flexi passes let you use non-consecutive days.
Pass wins when Visiting 3 or more countries with a flexible itinerary and 10+ train journeys in the pass window, or mixing fast trains across borders where advance fares are hard to find.
Interrail Global Pass
33 European countries EU residents only
Coverage Identical network to Eurail Global — all 33 countries. The European resident counterpart to Eurail. Same seat reservation surcharges apply on high-speed routes.
Cost range From ~€218 (5 days within 1 month, 2nd class adult). Pricing broadly mirrors Eurail. Youth (under 28) and senior (60+) discounts available.
Pass wins when Same use case as Eurail — multi-country, rail-heavy, flexible travel. Designed for EU, EEA, and Swiss residents; proof of residency required at purchase.
Swiss Travel Pass
Switzerland Non-residents only
Coverage All Swiss Federal Railways, PostBus routes, and lake boats. Most mountain railways included (Rigi, Pilatus, Schynige Platte). Jungfraujoch and a handful of aerial cableways receive a 25% discount rather than free entry.
Cost range 3 days ~CHF 244 ($275 USD), 6 days ~CHF 320 ($360), 8 days ~CHF 355 ($400) — 2nd class adult. Includes free admission to 500+ Swiss museums.
Pass wins when Almost always the better value within Switzerland. Zurich → Lucerne → Interlaken → Zermatt → Geneva costs substantially more individually. Mountain railway access at no extra charge seals it.
Germany Deutschlandticket
Germany Open to all
Coverage All regional trains (RE, RB, S-Bahn) and local transit (U-Bahn, trams, city buses) across Germany. Does not cover ICE, IC, or EC long-distance trains — those require a separate ticket.
Cost range €49/month, sold as a monthly subscription. Cancel any month. Available to tourists and residents alike with no residency requirement.
Pass wins when Slow travel through Germany using regional trains, or a longer city stay with heavy local transit use. Not suited for fast inter-city hops — ICE trains require a separate Bahn ticket regardless.
Renfe Spain Pass
Spain Non-residents only
Coverage All Renfe long-distance trains (AVE, Alvia, Intercity) plus regional Media Distancia and Avant services. Seat reservations included. Must be purchased outside Spain.
Cost range 4 trips from ~€215 (Standard) · ~€295 (Comfort), up to 10 trips (~€450 Standard). Valid for 6 months from purchase date. Non-residents of Spain only; sold via renfe.com.
Pass wins when 4 or more Spanish cities with AVE connections. Madrid → Barcelona or Madrid → Seville each run €60–100+ individually; a 4-trip pass at ~€215 pays off from the fourth segment at peak fares.
Eurail / Interrail One Country Pass
Single European country Non-residents (Eurail) · EU residents (Interrail)
Coverage National rail in one country of choice: France, Italy, Germany, Austria, Norway, Portugal, and others. Same reservation rules apply on high-speed routes. Useful for countries not covered by a dedicated national pass.
Cost range From ~€115 (3 travel days within 1 month, 2nd class adult). Pricing varies by country — Italy and France passes tend to be higher; Eastern Europe lower.
Pass wins when Deep rail exploration of one country with a flexible schedule. In Italy and France, advance fares booked 6+ weeks ahead often undercut the pass significantly.
Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass)
Japan Non-residents only
Coverage All JR shinkansen (bullet trains) except the fastest Nozomi and Mizuho services; all JR limited express, express, and local trains; some JR bus and ferry routes. Exchange the voucher for a physical pass at JR offices in Japan.
Cost range 7-day ~¥50,000 ($330 USD), 14-day ~¥80,000 ($530), 21-day ~¥100,000 ($665) — ordinary (2nd) class. Prices increased substantially in 2023.
Pass wins when Tokyo plus 2 or more shinkansen cities: Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, Kanazawa, or Hokkaido. Tokyo → Osaka → Kyoto → Tokyo round trip on the shinkansen alone nearly covers the 7-day pass cost. Not worth it for a Tokyo-only stay.
BritRail Pass
United Kingdom Non-residents only
Coverage All National Rail trains in England, Scotland, and Wales. Does not cover Northern Ireland, the London Underground, or private heritage railways. Must be purchased outside the UK before travel — it cannot be bought in Britain.
Cost range 2 consecutive days from ~$120 USD, 8 days from ~$370, 1 month from ~$695. Flexi passes (choose non-consecutive travel days within a 2-month window) are also available.
Pass wins when 4 or more UK cities over 2+ weeks with spontaneous, unplanned travel. UK advance fares can be very cheap (London → Edinburgh from £35 if booked early) — a fixed itinerary often makes individual tickets the better deal.
