Terraced vineyards and the Danube River near Spitz in the Wachau, Austria
Danube Cycle Path: Passau to Vienna
Austria · River towns & vineyards
325 km · 6–8 daysEasy–moderate · paved paths & short road sectionsMay–June / September · Vienna VIE or Munich MUC
Details & links
Ride downstream through Upper Austria and the Wachau to Vienna. Plan roughly 45–65 km on riding days; hire, inns and rail connections are plentiful in the main towns. The full Austrian EuroVelo 6 section continues beyond Vienna: this distance describes the Passau–Vienna itinerary, not the entire international route. Check flood-related closures and ferry timetables. The photograph shows the Wachau section.
Windmill and vineyard at Thouarcé in the Bonnezeaux AOC, Loire Valley, France
Loire à Vélo: Cuffy to Saint-Brevin
France · Châteaux & riverside villages
About 620 km end to end · 10–14 daysEasy–moderate · paths & quiet roadsMay–June / September · Nantes NTE or Paris + rail
Details & links
The 900 km network includes loops and connections; the main end-to-end ride is about 620 km. Plan 40–65 km daily, with shorter days for castles. Follow official signage and use Accueil Vélo accommodation and rental listings; summer beds and one-way hires need booking. Not every segment is segregated from traffic. The regional vineyard photograph illustrates the Loire setting rather than a specific cycle-path segment.
Colorful canal houses reflected in the water at golden hour in Amsterdam
Amsterdam & Waterland day loop
Netherlands · City lanes to polder villages
Plan 30–50 km · 1 dayEasy · paved paths with busy urban junctionsApril–September · Amsterdam AMS
Details & links
Choose an out-and-back or loop in the official Bike City route planner; 30–50 km is a suggested day plan, not the length of one signed route. City-bike hire is widespread and village cafés make breaks easy. Wind can make a flat ride feel strenuous. Follow local cycling rules, give way at junctions and watch tram tracks; this is not a traffic-free city tour. The photograph shows Amsterdam, the starting base.
Wine and vineyard landscape of Central Otago, New Zealand's southernmost wine region
Otago Central Rail Trail
New Zealand · Historic railway & big inland skies
152 km · 3–5 daysEasy / Grade 1 · unsealed gravel rail trailOctober–April · Queenstown ZQN or Dunedin DUD
Details & links
Ride Clyde to Middlemarch through former railway tunnels, bridges and small towns. A 30–50 km daily plan leaves room for stops; specialist operators offer bike hire, shuttles and luggage transfers, and accommodation is spread along the trail. Book ahead in busy periods. Expect exposed wind, temperature swings and gravel rather than asphalt; bring lights for tunnels. The photograph shows Central Otago's wider landscape.
Urquhart Castle ruins on the shore of Loch Ness
Great Glen Cycle Way
United Kingdom · Canal, forest & Loch Ness
About 120–124 km · 2–4 daysModerate–demanding · towpaths, forest tracks & road linksMay–September · Inverness INV or Glasgow + rail
Details & links
Connect Fort William with Inverness along a bicycle-suitable Great Glen alignment. Distances vary with the chosen cycling variant. Do not assume the walking Way is identical to the bike route: some steep or narrow walking segments need alternatives. Use the operator's current cycling itinerary or GPX, a suitable mountain or robust gravel bike, and pre-book hire and luggage arrangements. Rain, midges and remote stretches matter more than the headline distance.
