Entry Requirements

eVisas and travel authorizations, before you board.

The pre-entry authorizations and eVisas a traveler has to arrange before boarding — ESTA-style travel authorizations, electronic visas and online arrival cards — with what each costs and how far ahead to apply. Eligibility for each system varies by passport, so confirm yours on the official site linked below. Countries that need a full visa application are on the Visas page, which answers for your own passport specifically. Rules here change with little notice, so the page also tracks the ones currently in flux, including ETIAS. It also covers what to expect at passport control once you land — typical wait times at several fleet-city airports, and the programs that speed the line up. Arriving overland instead of by air? See Land Border Crossings for what to expect at the physical border.

ETIAS is expected in the last quarter of 2026. The EU has not announced the exact start date. Once it begins, visa-exempt visitors will need a €20 pre-travel authorization, valid for 3 years or until the passport expires, to enter 30 European countries. It is not required yet; follow the official ETIAS site below for the launch date.

Which countries are visa-free with no pre-travel step at all depends entirely on which passport you're holding — a list that is visa-free for one nationality can require a full visa for another. The Visas page answers this properly: pick your own passport there and see every destination in the matrix grouped by exactly what it needs, not a fixed example list. Standard rules still apply wherever no visa is needed: a passport valid at least 6 months beyond arrival, and no overstaying.

Entry rules change. Verify requirements with the destination's own immigration authority before every trip — especially ETIAS, which the EU expects in the last quarter of 2026 but has not given an exact start date.

Arrival Immigration Wait Times

How long passport control takes on landing depends far more on the airport than on any of the paperwork above — some of the busiest international arrivals halls among fleet-city airports run consistently long, others clear in minutes. Ranges below are typical, not guaranteed: a cluster of widebody arrivals or a single closed booth can push either figure higher. This is separate from Trusted Traveler Programs, which covers how to enroll in Global Entry or CLEAR — this section covers what to expect at the desk itself, enrolled or not.

AirportTypicalPeak
London Heathrow (LHR) T5 Busy
Non-UK/EU arrivals lines back up fastest in the afternoon, when several long-haul flights land within the same hour.
30–45 min 60–90 min
Los Angeles (LAX), Tom Bradley Int'l Busy
One of the busiest non-citizen immigration halls in the fleet; Global Entry cuts the wait to a few minutes at the kiosks.
25–40 min 45–90 min
Paris CDG, Terminal 2 Busy
The EU's EES biometric border system went fully live in April 2026 and adds time for first-time non-EU arrivals; summer 2026 saw queues run well past these ranges at peak hours.

Singapore Changi Fast
Automated lanes handle most passport types, keeping the hall moving even during peak arrival banks.
Under 5 min 5–10 min
Dubai (DXB) Smart Gates Fast
Smart Gate-eligible passports clear almost instantly; travelers needing a manual counter can wait longer.
Under 5 min 10–15 min
Tokyo Narita (NRT) Fast
Automated gates are open to a growing list of nationalities, though manual counters for everyone else can still back up on peak arrival banks.
