Lounge Access Methods

Lounge access, every way in — compared.

Four ways into an airport lounge — flying business, paying at the door, carrying a membership, or carrying the right credit card — and what each one actually costs once you look past the headline benefit. Priority Pass pricing tier by tier, what Amex Platinum, Chase Sapphire Reserve and Capital One Venture X really give you, the same-day-boarding-pass rules that turn people away at the desk, and which option is worth it depending on how often you fly.

The Four Ways In
Same four families as the lounge directory — here's what each actually costs
Airline & alliance

Your cabin on the day, or your alliance status. Costs nothing extra once you have the ticket or the status — the trade-off is that a membership card never opens these doors, no matter which one you carry.

Pay at the door

No ticket class, no card, no membership — anyone can buy in. About $25–$100 for two to three hours, and booking online through the lounge's own site or an app is reliably cheaper than paying at the desk.

Membership

Priority Pass is the widest network; LoungeKey and DragonPass cover many of the same rooms under a different bank's branding. Priced below. Busy lounges turn members away before ticketed passengers.

Credit card

A network the issuer owns outright (Amex Centurion) or a bundled Priority Pass membership (most other cards). Almost always needs a same-day boarding pass — see Rules below.

Priority Pass — What Membership Costs
Bought standalone, not bundled into a card
TierAnnual feeVisits includedAfter that
Standard$99/yearNone$35 per visit, every visit
Standard Plus$329/year10 visits$35 per visit
Prestige$469/yearUnlimited—

A guest costs $35 a visit on every tier — the fee is per person through the door, not per member. LoungeKey and DragonPass run separate, overlapping networks; which one (if any) your credit card bundles depends on the bank that issued it, not on you choosing one over Priority Pass.

What the Major Travel Cards Actually Give You
Beyond the headline "lounge access included" line
American Express Platinum (U.S.)
Centurion Lounge + Global Lounge Collection + Delta Sky Club
Entry needs the physical card, a same-day boarding pass, and government ID. Delta Sky Club: access on same-day Delta-operated flights, capped at 10 visits a year unless you spend $75,000 or more on the card in a calendar year (then unlimited on eligible days); a guest costs $50 ($25 at Grab and Go locations), a child age 2–17 costs $30. Centurion Lounges: a guest costs $50 ($30 for a child, free under 2); hitting the same $75,000 threshold unlocks two complimentary guests per visit instead.
  • Since July 8, 2026: you must arrive within 3 hours of departure on a single flight, or within 5 hours of a connecting flight's departure — and any guest must be booked on the same flight as you.
Chase Sapphire Reserve
Priority Pass Select + Chase Sapphire Lounges by The Club
Priority Pass Select — 1,300+ lounges worldwide — is automatically included for the primary cardholder, alongside Chase's own branded Sapphire Lounges and select Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounges & Cafés. Participating Priority Pass and Sapphire Lounge visits generally admit two guests; Air Canada locations admit one. Check the current benefit terms before adding an authorized user because enrollment eligibility has changed across versions of the card.
  • A standalone, non-Chase Priority Pass membership still receives one complimentary Sapphire Lounge visit per calendar year; additional or repeat visits are charged under that membership's terms. Sapphire Reserve cardholders retain unlimited eligible access.
Capital One Venture X
Unlimited entries — Capital One Lounges, Capital One Landings & Priority Pass network
The primary cardholder gets complimentary access to Capital One Lounges and Landings plus participating Priority Pass lounges after enrollment. Additional cardholders do not inherit lounge access automatically; the primary cardholder or account manager can add it for $125 per additional cardholder per year.
  • Priority Pass guests cost $35 per visit. At Capital One's own locations, guests cost $45 for adults and $25 for ages 17 and under; children under 2 are free. Spending $75,000 or more in a calendar year unlocks two complimentary guests at Capital One Lounges and one at Capital One Landings, but not at Priority Pass lounges.
  • The Venture X Business card is the exception: it still brings two guests into Priority Pass lounges free.
Rules That Catch People Out
The fine print behind "lounge access included"
Delta Sky Club needs a same-day boarding pass — always

Every access method — Delta status, a membership, or a co-branded card — requires a same-day boarding pass on a Delta-operated or eligible SkyTeam partner flight. Entry runs from up to 3 hours before departure, or during a same-day connection. There is no walk-in option, membership or not.

Basic Economy is excluded from Delta Sky Club

A Basic Economy ticket is turned away at Delta Sky Club regardless of status, membership, or card — the fare class itself is the block, not the access method.

Amex now checks your arrival time and your guest's flight

Since July 8, 2026: Centurion Lounges and Delta Sky Clubs (via the Platinum Card) require arrival within 3 hours of a single flight's departure, or 5 hours of a connecting flight — and any guest must be ticketed on the same flight as you.

Guest fees moved, they didn't disappear

Capital One Venture X guests cost $35 a visit in Priority Pass lounges. On the U.S. Platinum Card, $75,000 in annual eligible spend unlocks two complimentary Centurion Lounge guests; the separate Delta Sky Club threshold unlocks unlimited eligible visits for the cardholder, not free guests.

Which One's Worth It, by How Often You Fly
A rough frequency guide — not a recommendation to open a card for lounge access alone
Roughly how often you flyWhat tends to pay offWhy
1–2 trips a yearPay at the doorAn annual membership fee never earns itself back at that pace — two or three door visits a year costs less than any Priority Pass tier.
3–6 trips a yearPriority Pass Standard Plus, or a card that already bundles Priority Pass Select10 included visits roughly matches this range; if you'd carry a card like Chase Sapphire Reserve anyway for its other benefits, its bundled membership costs nothing extra.
7–15 trips a yearPriority Pass Prestige, or Capital One Venture XUnlimited visits stop being a luxury once per-visit fees would otherwise add up past the annual fee; Venture X gives the same unlimited entry as a card perk rather than a separate membership.
15+ trips a year, or you want the widest premium mixAmerican Express PlatinumThe Global Lounge Collection combines Centurion Lounges, partner networks, and Delta Sky Club on eligible Delta flights — at the cost of strict same-day-boarding-pass rules, visit limits, and guest fees.
