Berth types — pick before you book
Most trains offer at least two of these.
Seat Budget
A reclining seat rather than a bed. Usually the lowest fare, but privacy, recline and overnight comfort vary sharply by train.
Couchette Mid-range
Fold-down bunk in a shared 4- or 6-berth compartment. Bedding supplied on most European services. Best value-to-rest ratio.
Sleeper cabin Premium
Private or semi-private locked cabin, 1–3 berths. Breakfast included on many European services. Sells out months in advance.
Deluxe / en-suite Luxury
Private cabin with its own shower and toilet. Offered on selected Nightjet, Caledonian Sleeper and other services; confirm the actual train and cabin type before paying.
What to bring on a night train
The essentials most people forget.
Eye mask + earplugs
Couchette compartments have uneven lighting and door noise through the night. These two items separate a rested arrival from a groggy one.
Small padlock
Keep passports, money and electronics with you. A small lock can secure bag zips, but do not fasten luggage to train fittings or block aisles and exits.
Water bottle
Fill it before boarding. Drinking-water and food service vary by train, route and time of night, so do not assume an open dining car or potable tap.
Power bank
Outlet and USB availability depends on the carriage, not just the route. Charge before boarding and carry a power bank as backup.
Offline ticket copy
Download the ticket or reservation before boarding and keep the required passport or ID within reach. Do not rely on mobile signal when staff check accommodation.
Toiletry kit in hand luggage
Your main bag goes on the overhead rack or under the bottom bunk. Keep a face wash, toothbrush, and a change of top layer in a small bag at your seat — a morning routine without digging through the whole pack.
