Tap Water

Safe, varies, or avoid.

29 regional starting points for drinking water, ice, brushing teeth, and accommodation water. “Usually safe” describes treated city mains water, not every tap; building plumbing, outages, rural supplies, islands, and temporary advisories can change the answer. Check the local utility or health authority when you arrive.

Before you go

1Choose a treatment method that removes the hazards at your destination. Many basic carbon filters improve taste but do not reliably remove viruses, bacteria, or every chemical contaminant.
2Where tap water may be unsafe, use factory-sealed or adequately disinfected water for drinking, brushing teeth, preparing food, and making ice.
3Do not assume restaurant ice is purified. Use ice only when you are reasonably certain it was made with safe water.
4Ask your accommodation what water source and treatment it uses. If safe water is not supplied, buy a factory-sealed product or use a suitable treatment method.
