Local Tastes
Banh Mi Saigon
A crusty baguette split and packed with pate, cold cuts, pickled carrot and daikon, cucumber, herbs and chili — Saigon's own take on the sandwich France left behind, sold from a single stall since 1989.
Com Tam
Broken rice topped with a charcoal-grilled pork chop, a steamed egg-meat cake and pickled vegetables — Saigon's signature everyday plate, and the only broken-rice kitchen in the city to earn a Michelin nod.
Ca Phe Vot
Sock coffee — dark roast strained through a cloth filter instead of a metal phin, a method Chinese-Vietnamese vendors brought to old Saigon. Served with condensed milk in the city's oldest surviving cafe, open since 1938.
Food Delivery
GrabFood
Foreign number: accepted. — the OTP SMS reliably reaches foreign carriers when the account is created on hotel WiFi before switching to a local SIM.
The dominant app in the city, with by far the widest restaurant coverage and an English-language interface; live order tracking and in-app chat with the driver make it the easiest for a visitor with no Vietnamese. Peak-hour surge pricing on delivery fees is the main downside.
food.grab.com
ShopeeFood
Foreign number: not accepted. — the OTP SMS routinely never arrives on foreign carriers even when the form accepts the number.
Often cheaper than GrabFood on the same order thanks to aggressive in-app vouchers, and it reaches some local kitchens that skip Grab, but the interface leans more heavily on Vietnamese-language menu text with less reliable English translation.
shopeefood.vn
Be
Foreign number: not accepted. — verification SMS is domestic-only in practice, the same limitation as ShopeeFood.
A distant third by order volume, useful mainly as a backup when a specific restaurant is on Be but not the bigger two platforms; delivery times are less predictable outside central districts.

Getting Around
Grab
Foreign number: accepted. — the OTP SMS reliably reaches foreign carriers when the account is created on hotel WiFi before switching to a local SIM.
Uber does not operate in Vietnam, so Grab is the default app for both rides and food. Fixed upfront fares and an English interface make it usable with no Vietnamese; motorbike and car options cover every price point and both are cheap by Western standards. Surge pricing during evening rush is the main downside.

Heads Up
Cu Chi Tunnels — Live-Fire Shooting Range
A firing range sits partway through the site — real AK-47 and M16 gunfire is audible across the whole tour, catching first-time visitors off guard.
Ho Chi Minh City — Crossing the Street
Traffic never fully stops — step off at a slow, steady pace and let motorbikes flow around you; stopping or bolting mid-crossing causes accidents.
Worth Knowing

A Lake With No Turtle, a Market Built on Swampland

Every local calls the roundabout on Vo Van Tan and Pham Ngoc Thach "Turtle Lake," yet the turtle it's named for has not been there since the 1970s. The story goes that President Nguyen Van Thieu was warned by a feng shui master that a dragon slept beneath the city, its head under his palace and its tail at this intersection — and that the only way to keep it pinned down was to place a turtle statue on the tail. A pond and platform went up, a large concrete turtle was set inside it, and within a few years the statue was gone, quietly removed or destroyed under circumstances nobody agrees on. The name outlived the turtle by half a century.

Ben Thanh Market's clock-tower facade — one of the most photographed sights in the city — sits on ground that was reclaimed swamp and canal bank until the early 1900s. French planners spent decades arguing over where Saigon's central market should go before construction finally began in 1912; when it opened on 28 March 1914, locals reportedly found the building itself more astonishing than anything for sale inside, since nothing that large or that modern had ever gone up in the city before.
