1.Lago Sarmiento~45 min
A pale ring of thrombolite reef — calcium-carbonate structures built by microbial colonies over thousands of years — crowns the shore of this 86-km² saline lake, one of only a few places on Earth where these living formations can still be seen forming. Local Tastes
Centolla
Southern king crab, hand-caught in the frigid waters of the fjords beyond Última Esperanza Sound — served simply with butter and lemon or baked into a cheese-topped chupe, a crab-and-cream gratin.
Cordero al Palo
Whole Magellanic lamb, butterflied on an iron cross and slow-roasted for hours beside an open wood fire — the defining dish of Patagonian ranch cooking.
Calafate Sour
A pisco sour built on the tart, blueberry-like calafate berry that grows wild across Patagonian shrubland — local legend holds that whoever eats the berry is bound to return.
Food Delivery
No national delivery platform — Uber Eats, Rappi, or PedidosYa — operates in Puerto Natales; the town is too small and remote for their coverage zones, which stop at Punta Arenas. Restaurants take delivery and pickup orders directly by phone or WhatsApp instead — Mesita Grande on Arturo Prat 196 runs its own WhatsApp ordering line for pizza delivery around town.
Getting Around
Uber
Foreign number: accepted. — the global app takes any country's mobile number at signup and Chilean carriers deliver the SMS verification code without issue.
In a town this size Uber works as a request layer over the local taxi fleet rather than independent Uber cars, so a trip is filled by a licensed taxi driver — reliable for bus-terminal runs around the clock, but pickups run slow when every taxi is already booked for a Torres del Paine day tour.

Worth Knowing

The town's own name is a story about giving up gracefully

Última Esperanza — "Last Hope" — is the name of the sound the whole town sits on, and it was never meant to be hopeful. In 1557 the Spanish navigator Juan Ladrillero sailed into it as his last attempt to find a way through to the Strait of Magellan before he was forced to turn back for lack of supplies. The channel turned out to be a dead end, closed off by glaciers rather than open water — so the name that now labels every tour boat, hotel and even the craft distillery downtown actually commemorates a failure. It says something about this town that it kept the name anyway.

Almost nothing here is more than a century old. Puerto Natales only exists because the Sociedad Explotadora de Tierra del Fuego needed a port to freeze and ship the wool and mutton from a million hectares of sheep estancias — the frigorífico at Puerto Bories on Day 1 is the actual reason the town was founded in 1911, not an afterthought bolted onto an older settlement. That history is also why the food here leans so hard on lamb: cordero al palo is not a tourist invention, it is what ranch hands were already eating a century before Torres del Paine had a single hiking trail.
