The highest viewpoint circuit in Wulingyuan, named for the Tujia farmer-king Xiang Dakun, who styled himself the Son of Heaven. From He Long Park the platforms look straight down onto forests of mist-wrapped sandstone needles; the cableway then glides down past the peaks to the valley floor.

1. Golden Whip Stream
A 7.5 km canyon-floor trail along a crystal-clear stream beneath sheer sandstone walls — flat, shaded, and the prettiest walk in the park. Named for the whip-shaped Golden Whip Rock midway, with wild macaques patrolling the banks. Start at the Shuiraosimen end and walk west toward the main gate.

The park's largest summit viewing platform at 1,050 m — a looping rim trail rings the plateau with sheer views over the whole pillar forest. The local saying goes that a trip to Zhangjiajie is wasted without reaching Huangshizhai; the cableway does the climb in six minutes.

Step onto 430 m of glass suspended 300 m above the canyon floor — the longest and highest pedestrian glass bridge in the world when it opened in August 2016. Designed by Israeli architect Haim Dotan, the deck is paved with 99 triple-layered glass panels; the valley far below is visible through every footstep.

After the bridge, descend to the canyon floor and follow a 5 km boardwalk through a narrow gorge flanked by 200 m limestone walls — past waterfalls, emerald pools and subtropical forest draped in mist. The trail traces a clear stream through the slot canyon; the boardwalk ends at a large natural amphitheatre pool.

The Coiling Dragon Cliff glass skywalk follows the cliff edge with a clear floor panel.

Tianmen Cave — 131.5 m high, 57 m wide — is a natural arch through the cliff face at 1,260 m, first recorded in 263 CE when a rockfall opened the passage. Climb the 999 stone steps of the Stairway to Heaven through the cave's interior; the nine slopes are said to represent life's peaks and troughs.

✨ Notes from the Stone Forest
The pillars here are not karst — they are quartz sandstone, a 380-million-year-old seabed lifted and then carved by nothing more dramatic than water, ice and tree roots. Over three thousand columns survived because each one wears a cap of harder rock like a helmet, shedding rain off its sides while the softer stone between them washed away. The forest on top is doing the slow work of destroying them: every root wedged into a crack is a future rockfall.
Zhangjiajie was also China's experiment in the very idea of a national park — in 1982 this was the first place in the country to be designated a national forest park, a decade before UNESCO listed the wider Wulingyuan area. The eco-buses, timed entries and four-day tickets that organize your visit today are the descendants of that first attempt to decide how many people a stone forest can hold.
