Each winter, hundreds of millions of monarch butterflies arrive in the oyamel fir forests of central Michoacán after a journey of up to 4,500 km from Canada and the United States. The trees bend under the weight of clustered wings, and the sound of flight is audible at peak congregation. Season runs November to March.
