2. Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park~2 hr 30 min
A private reserve with 16 bridges — six suspended steel-cable spans up to 98 m long — strung through primary rainforest above the Arenal foothills. The trail crosses 3 km of canopy and river-level forest, putting visitors at eye height with toucans, howler monkeys, and tree frogs.

3. La Fortuna Waterfall~2 hr
A 75-metre free-fall waterfall dropping into a pool at the base of a forested canyon 3 km south of La Fortuna. The descent to the pool is about 500 steps, steep; the ascent is the harder half. Steps can be slippery. Swimming in the pool is permitted. Fed by streams draining Chato Volcano.

4. Arenal Volcano National Park~2 hr 30 min
The park protects the 1,657m cone of Arenal Volcano. The Las Coladas trail crosses the solidified 1992 lava field at the base, threading through secondary forest reclaiming the hardened rock. The Mirador viewpoint faces the summit directly. Arrive early for the best odds of an unobstructed view.

5. Tabacón Thermal Resort & Spa~3 hr
A hot-springs complex fed by geothermal water heated by Arenal Volcano, channelled into terraced pools, rivers, and waterfalls framed by jungle. The grounds include a cold river, a waterfall to stand under, and a swim-up bar.

Day 2
From Hotel: 13 min → Lake Arenal
1. Lake Arenal~1 hr
Costa Rica's largest lake — an 85 km² reservoir created in 1979 when a dam flooded the original town of Arenal. The northern shore road passes through cattle-ranch country with Arenal Volcano framing the eastern horizon. The western shore ranks among the world's top windsurfing venues.

Day 3
From Hotel: 2h 19min → Caño Negro National Wildlife Refuge
1. Caño Negro National Wildlife Refuge~3 hr 30 min
A flooded lowland refuge in the northern plains near the Nicaraguan border, centred on the Río Frío. Boat tours move at walking pace through channels packed with wildlife: caiman, jabiru storks, roseate spoonbills, anhingas, river turtles, howler monkeys, and freshwater bull sharks. Over 300 bird species recorded.

Day 4
From Hotel: 1h 50min → Tenorio Volcano National Park
1. Tenorio Volcano National Park~4 hr
The park's signature trail leads to Río Celeste, a river that runs turquoise-blue due to the mixing of volcanic minerals and the scattering of light by suspended particles. The 4 km return trail descends through cloud forest to a blue lagoon, a set of geysers, and a small waterfall where two clear tributaries merge and the colour appears. Muddy in places — waterproof shoes recommended.

Day 5
From Hotel: 15 min → Sky Adventures Arenal Park
1. Sky Adventures Arenal Park~3 hr
An aerial adventure park on the slopes of Arenal Volcano offering the Sky Tram gondola — a 45-minute open-gondola ride ascending through forest canopy with direct views of the volcano — and Sky Trek, a set of eight ziplines descending from the upper station back to the base. A separate hanging-bridges walk links sections of the canopy trail at tree-top level.

2. Venado Caves~2 hr
An 8-chamber limestone cave system extending nearly 3 km underground, discovered in 1945 when a farmer fell through the ground. Guided two-hour tours navigate galleries of stalactites, stalagmites, marine fossils, resident bats, and a cave river. Visitors are issued helmets and headlamps; the path involves crouching, wading, and narrow passages.

3. La Fortuna Parque Central~1 hr 30 min
The small central square at the heart of La Fortuna, facing the white-painted Iglesia San Juan Bosco. The church facade with the conical profile of Arenal Volcano directly behind it forms the most photographed view in the Arenal region — clearest on calm mornings. The square is ringed by sodas, souvenir shops, and the main bus stop, making it a practical lunch stop between activities.

4. Eco Termales Hot Springs~2 hr
A boutique hot-springs complex 800 m east of La Fortuna town, limited to 100 guests at a time to maintain a quiet atmosphere. Dining Areas
La Fortuna town centre
La Fortuna's compact centre has a walkable restaurant cluster around the park: Don Rufino · Organico Fortuna · Balcón Arenal · La Forchetta · Soda Víquez.
Local Tastes
Gallo Pinto
Rice and black beans cooked together, seasoned with Salsa Lizano, served with eggs, tortillas, and fried plantains at breakfast. The national dish — every soda in La Fortuna serves it.
Casado
The standard Costa Rican lunch plate: rice and beans side by side, a protein — grilled chicken, beef, or fish — and plantains or salad. Best-value eating at any local soda.
Chifrijo
A layered bowl of frijoles, white rice, chicharrón, pico de gallo, and avocado served with tortilla chips. Invented in San José in the 1990s and now a staple bar food across Costa Rica.
Café Chorreado
Coffee brewed through a cloth sock filter — the traditional Costa Rican method. San Carlos region Arabica brewed this way is clean and full. Ask for negro or con leche.
Agua Dulce
A hot morning drink made by dissolving raw cane sugar in hot water or milk. Common in the cooler mountain region around Arenal — lighter and sweeter than coffee.
Food Delivery
No delivery platforms operate in the La Fortuna / Arenal area — the town is too remote and small for major services; dine at the hotel restaurant or one of the local spots near the centre.
Getting Around
Uber
Foreign number: accepted. — the code comes by SMS to any international number, and "Call me with code" reads it out if the SMS is blocked.
Operates throughout the La Fortuna and Arenal area; the most reliable option for reaching the volcano park, La Fortuna Waterfall, Tabacón hot springs and the hanging bridges — distances are too great to walk and taxis require cash negotiation.

Worth Knowing

Locals Called It Just a Mountain — Then It Erupted Without Warning

For centuries before 1968, the people living at the foot of Arenal called it Cerro Arenal — Arenal Hill — because nothing in living memory suggested it was anything other than a quiet, forested mountain. On the morning of July 29, 1968, it erupted with no warning at all, hurling rocks weighing several tons more than a kilometer at extreme speed and burying three villages — Tabacón, Pueblo Nuevo, and San Luís — under lava, ash, and debris. Eighty-seven people died, some swept away trying to cross a stream that the eruption had turned into a torrent within minutes. The Las Coladas trail that visitors now walk across at the base of the volcano runs directly over that same hardened 1968 flow.

Lake Arenal hides an entire drowned town beneath its surface. When the dam was built in 1979, it flooded the original settlement of Arenal along with the nearby town of Tronadora, and in dry years when the water drops low enough, the old church steeple still breaks the surface near the shore. The dam that submerged those towns now generates a large share of the country's electricity — the lake framing the volcano views on the Day 2 shore drive is, underneath, a working power plant.
