Day 1
From Hotel: 10 min · 3 min → USS Constitution
1. USS Constitution~1 hr 15 min
"Old Ironsides" — the oldest commissioned warship still afloat, undefeated in 42 sea battles. British cannonballs bounced off her oak hull. Sailors in dress uniform lead the free tour of the gun decks and captain's quarters; the adjacent museum covers her construction and three wars at sea.
Tuesday - Sunday 10:00am - 6:00pm
Closed Monday
Free
USS Constitution, Charlestown Navy Yard
2. Old North Church~1 hr
The oldest surviving church in the city and the most famous in America — the steeple from which sexton Robert Newman hung two lanterns, signalling Paul Revere that the British were crossing the Charles by sea. The interior still holds the original box pews numbered by family.

Old North Church, Boston
3. Paul Revere House~1 hr
The oldest surviving structure in downtown Boston — a timber frame house built around 1680, home to Paul Revere from 1770 to 1800. Revere left from here on April 18, 1775, for his midnight ride. The rooms hold period objects including Revere family silver; the courtyard holds his original signal lanterns.
Paul Revere House, North End, Boston
4. Beacon Hill~45 min
The Federal-era neighbourhood of red-brick rowhouses, gas-lit cobblestone lanes, and iron boot scrapers polished by residents. Acorn Street — the most photographed street in New England — is one block of 19th-century city life compressed into a single frame: steep cobbles, purple-paned windows, and black shutters.
Open 24/7
5 min uphill
Acorn Street, Beacon Hill, Boston
5. Boston Common & Public Garden~1 hr
The oldest public park in the United States — 50 acres of lawns, the Frog Pond skating rink, and Swan Boats gliding through the willow-lined lagoon of the adjacent Public Garden. The two green spaces form the living heart of the city and the southern gateway to the Freedom Trail.
Boston Common and Public Garden green space
Beacon Hill has good evening dining options
Day 2
From Hotel: 10 min → Museum of Fine Arts
1. Museum of Fine Arts~2 hr 30 min
One of the five largest art museums in the United States, with 450,000 works across 53 galleries — Monet's complete haystack series, one of the world's finest collections of ancient Egyptian art, and the largest gathering of Japanese art outside Japan.

2. Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum~2 hr
A Venetian palazzo built in 1903 housing Isabella Stewart Gardner's personal collection — Titian, Rembrandt, Sargent, and Vermeer arranged exactly as her will specifies, which forbids any rearrangement. Thirteen works were stolen in the unsolved 1990 art heist; the empty frames still hang where the paintings were.

Closed Tuesday
Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston
3. Boston Public Library~1 hr 30 min
The first large free municipal library in the United States, founded 1848. The McKim building houses Bates Hall — a 218-foot barrel-vaulted reading room open to anyone — and John Singer Sargent's mural cycle painted over 28 years. The courtyard is modeled on the Palazzo della Cancelleria in Rome.
Monday - Thursday 9:00am - 9:00pm · Friday - Saturday 9:00am - 5:00pm · Sunday 1:00pm - 5:00pm
Boston Public Library, Copley Square
Day 3
From Hotel: 8 min → Trinity Church
1. Trinity Church~1 hr
The Romanesque masterwork of Henry Hobson Richardson, ranked the most important building in American architecture in the American Institute of Architects' definitive survey. Its reflection in the face of the Hancock Tower directly across Copley Square is one of the great urban compositions in American cities.

Sunday 8:00am - 6:00pm
Closed Monday
Trinity Church, Boston
2. Fenway Park~1 hr
The oldest Major League Baseball park still in use. The guided tour leads through the press box, the Red Sox dugout, and onto the field itself, then up to the top of the 37-foot Green Monster left-field wall — the most iconic structure in all of American sport.
Fenway Park Gate B, Boston
3. Harvard Yard~1 hr 30 min
The 22-acre core of the oldest university in the United States, founded in 1636. Massachusetts Hall — built 1720 — is still in use. The John Harvard statue is a triple fiction: a sculptor's idealised face, the wrong John Harvard, and the wrong founding date — yet it remains the most photographed object on campus.
Harvard Yard, Cambridge, Massachusetts
Day 4
From Hotel: 22 min · 13 min → Faneuil Hall
1. Faneuil Hall~1 hr
The colonial meeting house where Samuel Adams rallied the town against British taxation — the Cradle of Liberty. The Great Hall retains its original wood-beamed interior and a painted portrait of Daniel Webster mid-speech; admission is free. Quincy Market rotunda wraps the block outside.
Daily 9:00am - 5:00pm

Faneuil Hall, Boston
2. Old State House~1 hr 30 min
Boston's oldest surviving public building, completed 1713. On March 5, 1770, soldiers fired on civilians below the balcony — the Boston Massacre. On July 18, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was first read publicly in Massachusetts from that balcony to a crowd on State Street.
Old State House, Boston
3. Old South Meeting House~45 min
The 1729 meeting hall where 5,000 Bostonians gathered on December 16, 1773, and voted to return three tea ships to Britain. When Governor Hutchinson refused, Samuel Adams gave the signal from this pulpit — the Boston Tea Party began. The hall's original box pews and galleries survive intact.
Old South Meeting House, Boston
4. Massachusetts State House~1 hr
Charles Bulfinch's 1798 Federal capitol. The gold dome was sheathed in copper by Paul Revere's company in 1802, then gilded in 1874. A pine cone sits atop — symbol of the Maine timber trade when Maine was still a Massachusetts district. Free tours cover the Hall of Flags and Senate Chamber.

Closed Saturday & Sunday

5. View Boston~1 hr
The city's only observation deck, on floors 50–52 of the Prudential Tower, 800 feet above the city. On clear days the view sweeps from the Blue Hills to the south, over the harbour to the airport, and north to New Hampshire. The sky terrace on the 52nd floor is the highest open-air vantage point in New England.

Worth Knowing

What makes this city remarkable in the English-speaking world is that it has kept its revolutionary geography almost intact. The 2.5-mile Freedom Trail threads through sites that are not reconstructions or museums of themselves, but the actual buildings where the events happened: the Old South Meeting House where Samuel Adams called the Tea Party; the Old State House from whose balcony the Declaration of Independence was first read aloud in Massachusetts; the Granary Burying Ground where Paul Revere, John Hancock, and Samuel Adams are still buried under the same headstones visitors can touch.

The USS Constitution's status struck me most in research. She is not a restored ship. She is not a replica. She is the same vessel, with the same naval commission, that last fired her guns in anger more than two centuries ago — and she is still crewed by active-duty US Navy sailors who live on board. The world's oldest commissioned warship, still in service. The sailors give you the tour.

The pairing of Day 2 surprised me too. The Museum of Fine Arts has one of the world's great Impressionist collections — and is a short walk from Fenway Park. Within 90 minutes you can go from standing in front of a Monet haystack to standing in the Red Sox dugout and looking up at the Green Monster. No other American city puts those two things so close together.
