Local Tastes
Nyama Choma
Swahili for "roasted meat" — goat or beef slow-grilled over charcoal, sold by the kilo, and served with kachumbari and ugali. Kenya's signature dish and a weekend ritual across Nairobi.
Food Delivery
Uber Eats
Foreign number: accepted. — signs in with the rider's existing Uber account, verified in their home country, so no fresh Kenyan SMS code is required.
Nairobi's largest delivery app by restaurant count, with real-time GPS tracking and reliable pickup times around Westlands and the CBD; coverage thins fast past the ring road.
ubereats.com
Glovo
Foreign number: not accepted. — the sign-up SMS routinely fails to reach non-Kenyan numbers, a common blocker for visitors without a local SIM.
Kenya's widest delivery selection outside restaurants too — pharmacies, supermarkets and electronics alongside food — but courier wait times run longer than Uber Eats at peak hours.
glovoapp.com
Jumia Food
Foreign number: not accepted. — the same SMS-gateway limits that block Glovo apply here, and a Kenyan SIM is the reliable workaround.
Kenya's homegrown platform, now folded into the main Jumia shopping app, with stronger coverage of local Kenyan eateries than the international apps carry.

Getting Around
Uber
Foreign number: accepted. — signs in with the rider's existing Uber account, verified in their home country, so no fresh Kenyan SMS code is required.
The default ride-hailing app in Nairobi, with wide coverage and upfront fares; drivers sometimes push for a cash trip outside the app during heavy traffic hours.

Worth Knowing

The city runs on mobile money more than on cash or cards.

M-Pesa, Kenya's mobile-money network, is the default way locals pay for everything from a matatu fare to a market stall — many small vendors don't carry change for cash and some don't take cards at all, though the hotels, malls, and restaurants in this guide all do.

Nairobi sits at roughly 1,795 meters above sea level — about 5,889 feet — so despite lying almost on the equator, mornings and evenings are cool enough for a light jacket year-round, and sunburn comes faster than the mild-feeling air suggests.

Traffic on the main arteries — Uhuru Highway, Waiyaki Way, Mombasa Road — can turn a 20-minute drive into over an hour during the roughly 7-9am and 5-7pm rush; the walk and ride times in this guide assume normal traffic outside those windows.
