Local Tastes
Santa Barbara Wines
Santa Barbara County is one of California's premier wine regions — Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the Santa Rita Hills appellation, poured at dozens of tasting rooms along the Funk Zone wine trail one block from State Street.
Tri-Tip Barbecue
Santa Maria-style tri-tip is the regional barbecue tradition — oak-smoked beef cooked over red oak coals and served with salsa and pinquito beans. Born in the Santa Maria Valley north of Santa Barbara.
Channel Islands Seafood
Sea urchin, local spot prawns, and Santa Barbara spiny lobster caught from the waters between the mainland and the Channel Islands — best found at the Saturday farmers market and harbor restaurants.
Food Delivery
DoorDash
Foreign number: accepted. — the code arrives by SMS on an international number, though a US number avoids the occasional verification delay.
The deepest list in Santa Barbara — most of the State Street, Funk Zone and Milpas taquerias are on it, with delivery to the Moxy in 20–30 minutes and late options past 11pm. Fees stack up on small orders; DashPass only pays off if you order more than twice.
doordash.com
Uber Eats
Foreign number: accepted. — it runs on the same Uber account, so the code comes by SMS to any international number, with a voice call as the fallback.
Runs on the Uber account you already have, so there is nothing extra to set up, and coverage downtown and along the waterfront is close to DoorDash's with a shorter list of Milpas Street spots. Couriers are fewer out in Montecito and Goleta, where waits stretch past 45 minutes.

Getting Around
Uber
Foreign number: accepted. — the code comes by SMS to any international number, and "Call me with code" reads it out if the SMS is blocked.
The dependable option in Santa Barbara — a car reaches State Street in three or four minutes and the runs out to the Mission, the Botanic Garden and Montecito are short and cheap. The pool thins after 10pm on weeknights and out at Painted Cave, where you should keep the same driver waiting.
uber.com
Lyft
Foreign number: not accepted. — Lyft's own help says the number must be a US, Canadian or Puerto Rican one, and the code is texted only to that number.
Runs alongside Uber across downtown, the waterfront and Montecito and is often a few dollars cheaper on the longer hops to Goleta — worth keeping open to compare fares. Thinner on drivers after dark on the Mesa, and unusable without a North American number.

Worth Knowing

On Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara works on you differently from most California cities. There is no single monument, no skyline, no marquee attraction that defines it — what defines it is the accumulated effect of a place that has been obsessively consistent about how it looks and how it is used. The Spanish Colonial Revival ordinance passed after the 1925 earthquake was a civic bet that turned out, in hindsight, to be exactly right: red tile roofs and white stucco at street level, the Santa Ynez Mountains in every upward glance, and the Pacific six blocks west of State Street.

The best version of Santa Barbara is a weekday version — before the weekend crowds reach Stearns Wharf and State Street. Walk to the Courthouse early, climb the clock tower when the tour groups are still at breakfast, and look south toward the Channel Islands. Mission Santa Barbara in the late morning light is better than any photograph of it. And Lotusland, if you have a reservation, is genuinely unlike anything else in Southern California — less a garden than a private world assembled by someone who did not believe in doing things halfway.
