💧 Why the Water Runs Clear
Lake Annecy's almost unreal turquoise isn't an accident. By the 1960s the lake was dying — sewage from the lakeside towns had turned it murky and swimming was banned. A regional syndicate ran a then-radical fix: a ring main collected every town's wastewater and carried it out of the basin entirely. The lake recovered so completely that it is now often called the cleanest large lake in Europe, fed by underwater springs and an alpine river you can see straight to the bottom of.
That same water leaves the lake through the Thiou — the canal you cross all day in the old town. At roughly 3.5 km it is one of the shortest rivers in France, and for centuries its current did all the work: it powered the mills, tanneries and forges that built medieval Annecy, which is why the Palais de l'Isle sits mid-stream like a stone ship. The postcard you photograph is really a piece of working industrial plumbing that never stopped running.
