Glasgow rewards walking with your head tilted up. The wealth of the shipbuilding and tobacco eras went straight into stone — red and blonde sandstone tenements, the muscular City Chambers, the spires of the old town — so the city centre reads like an open-air gallery of Victorian ambition. Then it keeps surprising you: Zaha Hadid's silver wave on the Clyde, the Kibble Palace's iron bubble of ferns, a medieval cathedral that quietly outlasted the Reformation.
It is also a city that makes things and feeds you well while doing it — a Cantonese institution older than most of its rivals, a Michelin kitchen above a tenement, a teacake empire in the suburbs.
