🌋 A Mountain That Has Never Finished Cooling

Tenerife sits at the centre of a geometric paradox: a Spanish island with an African latitude, a subtropical coastline pinned beneath a summit that catches snow. Mount Teide, at 3,718 metres the highest peak in Spain, rises from banana plantations and Canarian pine forest to bare volcanic rock in under an hour's drive. Almost nowhere else can you stand in a cloud forest in the morning and be under desert sun by noon — or watch the shadow of the volcano fall across the clouds below you and realise you are looking at the world from inside a weather system.

The island carries the weight of the Atlantic on its back. The Guanche — the Berber-speaking people who lived here before the Spanish conquest — are absorbed now, but the landscape still speaks their logic: the dragon tree at Icod, older than any European settlement on the island, was sacred to them for its bleeding red resin, and the ridge village of Masca still looks more like North Africa than Castile. La Laguna, the colonial capital, was built as the template for every Spanish city that followed in the Americas — its grid, its central plaza, its civic scale — which means that every time you walk its streets you are walking through the blueprint of a continent.
