Worth Knowing

Whale Season on Banderas Bay

Between December and March, humpback whales migrate into Banderas Bay — one of the deepest natural bays in the Americas — to breed and calve in warm Pacific water. The bay's protected geography concentrates dozens of whales in a small area, making the city one of the most reliable whale-watching destinations on the continent. What makes it exceptional: the ferry crossing to Las Caletas or Yelapa runs straight through prime whale territory, turning a transit into an unscheduled encounter. No dedicated whale-watch boat required — even the water taxi routes cross the migration corridor.

Outside whale season, Banderas Bay hosts manta rays in summer and large pelagic species year-round. The marine activity that defines this destination — snorkelling at Los Arcos, the bioluminescence tours, the fishing charters — is a direct function of the bay's depth and upwelling nutrient supply. The city sits at the convergence of two Sierra Madre mountain ranges meeting the Pacific, which funnels cold nutrient-rich water into the bay and explains the exceptional marine biodiversity that distinguishes it from other Mexican beach destinations.
