Day 1
From Hotel: 🚕 7 min → Grotta Azzurra
1. Grotta Azzurra
A sea cave where sunlight enters through a submerged opening, turning the water an impossibly luminous blue. Emperor Tiberius used it as his private swimming pool — iron rings in the rock are still visible. Cash only; arrive by 9:30am to beat queues.

2. Piazzetta
Piazza Umberto I — Capri's sun-drenched outdoor salon at the top of the funicular. Four cafés surround a clock-tower square where fishermen, fashion editors, and celebrities converge under the same awnings. Best experienced at a table with a slow espresso.
Piazza Umberto I, the Piazzetta of Capri, with clock tower and café terraces
3. Arco Naturale
A 12-metre limestone arch at Capri's eastern edge — the remnant of a prehistoric cave whose roof collapsed, leaving a perfect stone frame over the sea. The loop trail also passes Grotta di Matermania, a natural cavern where Romans built a nymphaeum. Wear walking shoes; uneven stone steps.

4. Monte Solaro
Capri's highest point at 589 m, reached by a 13-minute open-air single-seat chairlift from Anacapri. The summit delivers 360° views of the Amalfi Coast, Vesuvius, Ischia, and Procida. The café at the top is the highest bar in the Tyrrhenian. Hours shorten Nov - Mar.

Day 2
From Hotel: 🚕 15 min → Villa Jovis
1. Villa Jovis
Emperor Tiberius's cliff-top palace on the island's easternmost promontory — 355 metres above the sea — from which he governed the Roman Empire for the last decade of his rule. The ruins span 7,000 m² of cisterns, a lighthouse, and imperial apartments; on a clear day the view reaches Naples and Vesuvius.

2. Giardini di Augusto
Terraced botanical gardens laid out by Emperor Augustus above Via Krupp — a masterpiece of switchback engineering carved into the cliff below. From the upper terrace, the Faraglioni sea stacks and the southern coast fill the view in a direct panorama; the best land-side vantage of the island's most iconic rocks.

3. Via Tragara
The island's finest cliff-walk — a level promenade lined with villas running from the Piazzetta to the southern edge at Punta Tragara. The three Faraglioni sea stacks rise 100 metres from the water directly below, framed by the cliff face; the closest land-side view of the island's most iconic formation.

4. Villa San Michele
A clifftop villa built by Swedish physician Axel Munthe from 1896 to 1930 on the ruins of a Roman chapel above Anacapri. Colonnaded loggias, Egyptian and Roman antiquities, and a garden ending at a sphinx on the cliff edge — the highest viewpoint in the village, with views of both coastlines and the bay of Naples.

🍮 Local Tastes
Ravioli Capresi
Capri's signature pasta — half-moon pockets of fresh dough filled with local caciotta cheese, marjoram, and lemon zest, served in a simple tomato-basil sauce. Every trattoria makes them; the recipe is closely guarded by each family.
Insalata Caprese
Buffalo mozzarella layered with ripe tomatoes, fresh basil, and olive oil — nothing else. Invented here in the early 20th century; the tricolore of the Italian flag was intentional. On Capri, it arrives with warm fior di latte.
Torta Caprese
Dense, flourless chocolate-almond cake with a crackled top — a happy accident in the 1920s when a chef forgot to add flour. Now one of Italy's most copied regional desserts. Best at room temperature with powdered sugar.
Limoncello
Bright yellow liqueur made by macerating lemon zest in alcohol and sweetening with sugar syrup — served ice-cold in frosted glasses as a digestivo. Capri, Sorrento, and Amalfi all claim to have invented it.

🏛️ Running the World from an Island

For the last decade of his life — 27 to 37 AD — the Emperor Tiberius governed the Roman Empire entirely from Capri. From Villa Jovis, perched on the island's eastern cliff, he issued orders that crossed a 50-million-person empire: wars started and ended, senators were executed, Pontius Pilate was appointed to Judaea. Couriers rowed to the mainland and back. The most powerful man in the world chose to be unreachable, and Capri was his deliberate fortress. Next time you're at the Piazzetta watching the boats, you're sitting at the centre of ancient history.
