🐉 City of the Dragon

Ljubljana wears two signatures at once. One is the dragon — coiled on the city's coat of arms and cast four times in copper over the Dragon Bridge — said to descend from the Argonauts and Jason, who legend has slaying a marsh beast where the city now stands. The other is a single architect: Jože Plečnik, who in the early twentieth century quietly rebuilt his hometown into a stage set of bridges, colonnades, squares and a library that reads like a temple. Almost every stop on this two-day route is either his work or framed by it, and UNESCO has since listed the ensemble as a rare case of a city shaped by one human imagination.

For a capital, it is improbably green and small. Cars are kept out of the centre, the Ljubljanica curls through café terraces, and Tivoli's forest begins a ten-minute walk from the cathedral — which is why Ljubljana was named European Green Capital. Two unhurried days is truly enough to know it, and the river, the castle hill and the espresso are never more than a few minutes apart.

Day 4 stays inside the city but turns a corner. Slovenia's oldest botanical garden opens the morning, and the afternoon heads east to Fužine Castle — the only Renaissance castle left in Ljubljana, its arcaded courtyard housing the Museum of Architecture and Design — before ending at the City Museum of Ljubljana in the baroque Auersperg Palace, where Roman floor mosaics and Habsburg-era period rooms trace eight centuries of city life.

Day 5 is a single, deliberate escape. The bus north to Šmarna Gora takes twenty minutes; the trail through beech forest to the 669-metre summit takes thirty more. At the top, a Baroque pilgrimage church and a mountain inn look back over the entire Ljubljana basin, the Kamnik Alps banking east and the Julian Alps banking west — a view that is quietly one of the finest in Central Europe and almost never crowded.

Day 6 belongs to the most iconic lake in Central Europe. The SŽ train from Ljubljana reaches Lesce-Bled in under an hour; from the station, a short bus or taxi covers the four kilometres to the water. Lake Bled is a glacial mirror ringed by the Julian Alps, its island topped by a Baroque pilgrimage church reached by a traditional wooden pletna boat — a journey unchanged in centuries. In the afternoon, the climb to Bled Castle takes twenty minutes and delivers the finest viewpoint in Slovenia: the lake below, the island church centred within it and the Alps banking blue behind.
