Whistler is built on a contradiction. The mountains here are genuinely extreme — glaciated, crevassed, with snowfields that have never melted within recorded memory — and yet the village at the base is as comfortable and well-provisioned as any in the world. Most alpine resorts resolve this tension by keeping the wilderness at a safe distance, legible through glass from a well-heated lodge. Whistler doesn't. The gondola deposits you at 2,182 m with a 130-metre suspension bridge crossing a bowl whose walls drop away sharply on both sides. The Cheakamus Lake trail ends at the water's edge with nothing between the visitor and the glacier across the valley. The High Note Trail traverses a ridgeline where the terrain falls steeply enough in both directions that the route itself demands attention. The mountains aren't scenery here — they're the condition everything else is organized around. The village exists at their pleasure.
