Day 3
From Hotel: 15 min → San Juan Islands Sculpture Park
1. San Juan Islands Sculpture Park~1 hr 30 min
A 20-acre outdoor gallery on the road into Roche Harbor, with more than 150 sculptures by local and international artists set along five trails through meadow, orchard, and pond. Works rotate through the collection and range from abstract steel to figurative bronze; the grounds double as a working orchard open for foraging in season.
Daily 8:00am - 8:00pm
San Juan Islands Sculpture Park
2. Westcott Bay~1 hr
A sheltered bay on the island's northwest shore, calm enough for a first-time kayak launch and shallow enough to see the bottom on a clear day. Westcott Bay Shellfish Company farms oysters and clams along the shoreline and sells them straight off the dock — a picnic table and an oyster knife are the whole operation.

3. San Juan County Park~1 hr
A 12-acre park on rocky bluffs above Haro Strait, one bay south of Lime Kiln — a quieter alternative for the same shore-based orca watching, with views across to Vancouver Island and the Olympic Peninsula. The park doubles as a first-come campground and a put-in for sea kayaks heading down the west side.

1. Fourth of July Beach~1 hr
A quiet picnic beach on Griffin Bay, inside the American Camp unit of San Juan Island National Historical Park — site of the island's first non-Native settlement. Food Delivery
DoorDash
Foreign number: accepted. — the code arrives by SMS on an international number, though a US number avoids the occasional verification delay.
The only delivery app that reaches Friday Harbor, and even here the list is a few pizza and pub kitchens within a mile of the ferry, with drivers thin after 8pm and nothing delivered to the north end of the island. Most evenings the practical answer is a five-minute walk to a restaurant.

Getting Around
Uber
Foreign number: accepted. — the code comes by SMS to any international number, and "Call me with code" reads it out if the SMS is blocked.
Works in name only on San Juan Island — a handful of drivers in summer, often none at all off-season, so a request from Friday Harbor can sit unanswered for half an hour. Keep it as a backup and book the island taxi or the seasonal San Juan Transit shuttle for Lime Kiln and Roche Harbor instead.

Worth Knowing

A War Over a Pig

In June 1859, an American settler on San Juan Island shot a Hudson's Bay Company pig that had been rooting through his potato garden. What followed was one of the stranger episodes in US–British relations: each side sent troops, escalating to over 400 American soldiers and 5 British warships in the harbor, while the two commanding officers on the ground independently decided they had no intention of starting a war over the incident.

For 12 years, US and British soldiers occupied opposite ends of the same 55-square-mile island under formal joint military occupation, sharing whiskey and celebrating each other's national holidays. Kaiser Wilhelm I of Germany, asked to arbitrate, ruled in favor of the United States. The British garrison left peacefully. The pig, which started the whole thing, was the only casualty of the entire affair — and the reason Day 1 and Day 2 of this itinerary visit opposite ends of the same island.
