Worth Knowing

Two Dynasties, One Island

The Dunsmuir family built two of the three castles on this itinerary — and they never spoke to each other at the end. Robert Dunsmuir, the coal baron who commissioned Craigdarroch, died in 1889 before the castle was finished. His son James went on to build Hatley Castle on a far grander scale. The two estates sit roughly 15 kilometres apart; the family's coal fortune funded both, and a bitter inheritance dispute split the heirs for years. Visiting them across Day 2 and Day 3 turns the itinerary into a quiet family saga across the same generation of money and ambition.

Victoria's reputation as "more British than Britain" is partly accurate and partly theatre — the city actively cultivated the image in the early 20th century to attract tourists and settlers. The Fairmont Empress, the formal afternoon teas, the hanging flower baskets on Government Street: most of these traditions were deliberate marketing choices rather than organic inheritance. Canada's oldest Chinatown is a 10-minute walk from the Parliament buildings that enforced the Chinese Head Tax. Both histories are visible in the same city blocks, usually without comment.
